USMC Ranking Structure/ USN Hospital Corpsman Ranks Manual
Definitions. The following terms can be used interchangeably to stand in for the corresponding ranks.

Enlisted: Refers to all members in the ranks of E1 to E9.
Junior Enlisted: Refers to all members in the ranks of E-1 to E3.
Non-Commissioned Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of E4 and E5.
Staff/Senior Non-Commissioned Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of E6 to E9.

Warrant Officers: Refers to W-1 to W-5

Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of O1 to O10.
Company Grade Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of O1 to O3.
Field Grade Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of O4 to O6.
Flag Officer: Refers to all members in the ranks of O7 to O10.

Ranks. The rank structure utilized by the MARSOC is listed below from junior to senior, in the following format:

Enlisted Ranks:

E-1
Private / Hospitalman Recruit

*NO INSIGNIA*

A Marine Corps Private wears no uniform insignia and is sometimes described as having a "slick sleeve" for this reason. Most new, non-officer Marines begin their military career as a Private. Entry level rank held by all new recruits and awarded after completion of Recruit Training to join MARSOC.

E-2
Private First Class / Hospitalman Apprentice
PFC / HA

the rank of Private First Class is the second lowest rank. Awarded to members upon successful completion of SOI (School of Infantry).

E-3
Lance Corporal / Hospitalman
LCpl / HN

The Marines are the only component of the U.S. Armed Forces to have Lance Corporals. A Lance Corporal relies upon a composite score to be promoted to a Corporal. Awarded to members upon successful completion MARSOC A&S



E-4
Corporal / Hospital Corpsman Third Class
Cpl / HM3
 / 

Awarded to members who have completed MSOS (Marine Special Operations Schhool) ITC and is mandatory to successfully completed the Corporals Course, and shown increased ability and leadership.



E-5
Sergeant / Hospital Corpsman Second Class
Sgt / HM2
 / 

Awarded to members who have served for at least three weeks as an E-4, successfully completed the Sergeants Course, and shown increased ability and leadership.

E-6
Staff Sergeant / Hospital Corpsman First Class
SSgt / HM1
 / 

Awarded to members who have served for at least four weeks as an E-5, and shown increased ability and leadership. Promotions to this rank MAY only occur if a Tactical Element Leader positions is open



E-7
Gunnery Sergeant / Chief Hospital Corpsman
 / 

Awarded to members who have served for at least five weeks as an E-6, successfully completed the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Course, and shown increased ability and leadership.



E-8
Master Sergeant / Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman
MSgt / HMCS
 / 

Awarded to members who have served for at least two months as an E-7, and shown increased ability and leadership. A Master Sergeant will continue to provide technical leadership as an occupational specialist.



E-8
First Sergeant

Awarded to members who have served for at least two months as an E-7, and shown increased ability and leadership. A First Sergeant will provide general command leadership.



E-9
Master Gunnery Sergeant
MGySgt

Awarded to members who have served for at least three months as an MSgt or HMCS, and shown increased ability and leadership.

Sergeant Major /Master Chief Hospital Corpsman
SgtMaj / HMCM

Reserved for the Senior Enlisted Leaders for 2d MSOB, must have served for at least two months as a 1stSgt or two months as a HMCM, and shown increased ability and leadership. The Sergeant Major and Command Master Chief will provide generalized command level leadership and act as the MARSOC Commander’s principal advisors for all matters pertaining to the enlisted Marines and Sailors of the MARSOC.

Highest Rank that will ever achieve by the MARSOC C.O.
